Tackling the night shift: Top 10 tips for Nurses

The night shift for nurses can be difficult and if you're on a working holiday in Austarlia there can be even more challenges while you carefully balance the travel and work aspects of your time Down Under. We've been there and got the t-shirt so we felt it was only right to share our list of 10 helpful tips on tackling the night shift for nurses.

Top 10 tips for Nurses on the night shift

1. Sleep well

If you’re deprived of sleep, before or after your shift, then you won’t be as focused and likely to become irritable. You could be putting your patients, colleagues and yourself at risk.

2. Don’t forget to stay hydrated

Hydration is essential.  It will help you avoid headaches and tiredness. Drink water whenever you can.

3. Watch the caffeine

Having a tea or coffee is fine for a boost, but you should only drink water beyond 4am to aid sleep after your shift.

4. Eat properly

Before your shift begins, eat a proper meal to ensure you don’t go hungry during your shift.  If you need an energy boost, take a few healthy snacks with you.

5. Get comfortable

Stay comfortable through your shift and wear comfortable shoes.  If you wear contact lenses, wear glasses instead as they will offer more comfort to your eyes.

6. Keep exercising

In order to stay alert, keep active with activities such as walking, climbing a set of stairs, or body stretches.

7. Consider public transport

Risk of road accident or death is at its highest when you’re tired.  If it all possible, give public transport a go and stay safe.

8. Relax after your shift

It’s common to ponder over things that have happened during your shift.  It could result in a lack of sleep, so if it helps, talk it over with someone.  Beyond that, do whatever else you can to relax.

9. Keep an eye on your health

Poor health can have a detrimental effect on your body and mind.  You’re at risk of various ailments so it’s best to keep an eye on your health.  Eat well, keep yourself hydrated and take regular exercise.  If you’re concerned, see your doctor.

10. Make an effort with colleagues

Getting to know your colleagues gives a great impression but also increases the chances of your shift running as smoothly as possible.

Hopefully you’re already aware of (or acting on) these tips, but if you’ve learned something new then we are delighted we could help.
